Home Security Tips for DC and Maryland Residents on Vacation

Whether you get several vacations or just one real holiday every year, those days should be a clear break from all the worries and cares that surround you for almost fifty weeks a year. In a word, they should be a vacation. Because the big holiday seasons fall naturally during the end-of-year holidays and during the months of July and August, that means that some neighborhoods in DC and Maryland can start to look like a ghost town.
In the case of your home, there's probably more to be desired than a deserted town in the old West, so you want to leave behind a well-armed home security system to protect what you've worked so hard to earn. Here are five home security tips for Maryland and DC residents during that precious vacation time.
1. Get your valuables stored safely. There are definitely ways to keep things safe inside your home, but it's not recommended unless you have a trustworthy safe. Your home security system may not pack the same punch as your bank's, so think about heading to the safe deposit box with any jewelry that would make it worth a thief's while. Your artwork may be the most valuable movable property inside your house, so look to an artwork handler to keep paintings and sculptures tucked away safely.
2. Don't be obvious. Letting your overgrown lawn go a few more weeks is a bad idea, especially if it's accompanied by an overflowing mailbox. It's the equivalent of pinning a note to your gate which says "Gone for the holidays," usually a welcome sign for burglars, home alarm systems notwithstanding. Have the hedges and grass trimmed before you leave and ask your letter carrier to hold off for the duration of your trip.
3. Don't shy away from the use of gadgets. Maybe you've gotten a friend or relative to watch the family dog for your vacation time. That's a great idea, but dogs are natural defense tools. Consider getting a dog bark noisemaker, one of the gadgets on the market, or at least some light timers which go off periodically and imply the presence of humanity within.
4. Ask around about a house sitter. Maybe you have a babysitter who would love a break from a cramped apartment. Maybe you have a cousin who would love a week or two to himself. Either way, having a house sitter is almost as good as having a security guard. Make sure you explain how to operate your home alarm system clearly, and travel without a care in the world.
5. Let the neighborhood watch know. Don't expect preferential treatment or ask for twenty-four hour surveillance, just say that you'll be away for a while, so any added glances in your property's direction would be greatly appreciated.
