Preventing Your Cats from Destroying Your Backyard

Wouldn't life be more splendid if your cat will stop rampaging in your garden? The first step you have to do is to make sure that your fences are properly installed. Since cats are curious and cunning, even little gaps in your fences could be a chance for them to enter into your garden. Your cat is also nimble and flexible so it can jump over fences. Installing a taut wire on top of your fence is practical since this will prevent them from jumping over.

Once your cat enters your garden, it may be hard to make it move out. However, this task is not without a solution. Since you are a cat owner, you must know that cats dislike dogs. Dobermans and pit bulls are indeed some of the dog breeds that can truly scare away cats.

Another way to frighten cats is to shoot water on them. A garden hose and a bucket of water are the most basic things you need for this method. If one squirt of water is not enough, do it again and again until it takes the hint. If you have a sprinkler at home, you may use this instead of the bucket and garden hose. Go to your local hardware store and look for a motion activated sprinkler. Once you install the sprinkler system, its detector can immediately perceive any movement made by your cat. It will then target water towards your cat driving it away from your garden or lawn. The garden will then be cat-free because it will recognize that the garden is not its place to stay.


Your precious plants need defence from your cat as well. Sometime, cats stay under bushes and make these bushes their litter box. Putting moth balls around the area may help keep your cat away from your plants. Moth balls are known to drive away not only insects but your cats too because cats do not like their scent. Aside from moth balls, aromatic oils like citronella, cayenne, lemon grass, mustard and lavender can also be utilized. The scent of tobacco is also repulsive for cats.

You may also utilize ultrasonic devices to ward off cats. The high frequency sounds coming out of these devices, which cannot be perceived by people, are irritating for cats. Some ultrasonic devices are cordless while some have infrared motion sensors. The size of your garden matters when choosing an ultrasonic device to emply. Make sure that it can cover your entire garden to protect your plants from cats.

You can also use commercial repellents to rid the garden of cats. Commercial repellents has chemicals that produce odor that are repulsive for cats. Other animals can also be ward off by commercial repellents. Commercial repellents do contain chemicals, so be cautious in using them because some of these chemicals can be dangerous to health. Refrain from using this method if your garden contains mainly of vegetable crops.


To stop your cat from ruining your garden, choose from one of the following: Fences, water, sprinklers, dogs, ultrasonic devices and commercial repellents. If you value your garden, prevent your cats from destroying it. Do your part and protect your garden.
