Getting in shape, healthy eating, and weight loss are very difficult tasks to handle. Often, getting started is the most difficult part. Your mind is a powerful tool to meeting goals and staying on track. On the other hand, your thought patterns or feelings toward yourself can significantly hinder your ability to start a lifestyle of healthy living. Before you take on a resolution to do better, try these tips to get your mind in gear for the journey ahead of you.

*Educate yourself about your current lifestyle. Do some research online about the health risks associated with being overweight or eating a lot of fatty foods. Here's a toughy-learn about your favorite snack foods. Find out what the calories, fats, sugars, and other ingredients are doing to your body. If you care about your health, learning about how unhealthy and damaging some foods are will help you be ready to give them up-or at least cut down some!

*Educate yourself about the benefits of fitness. You would be shocked how many symptoms can be cured with exercise and healthy eating. The Internet is full of advice and information about healthy living. If you think exercise is just to lose weight or gain muscle mass, you are missing out on a lot of positive effects that can also be yours when you get in shape. Find out what symptoms, like fatigue or headaches, may be eliminated with a good exercise plan and healthy diet. This too will encourage you to start thinking positively about exercise and healthy food.

*Change your focus. The first step to feeling motivated about exercise or changing your diet is to think positively. You will be tempted to focus on negative thoughts. Have these thoughts crossed your mind?
-"This is going to take forever!"
-"I've got so far to go, there's no way I can do this."
-"There's no way I can enjoy eating healthy!"
These kind of thoughts are normal, but are also the very reason making these life changes are difficult. Think about these steps to physical fitness as a journey to better health. Tell yourself things will get easier as you go. Tell yourself you're going to look and feel so much better. Tell yourself your current lifestyle is not worth it. Find clubs, forums, and groups online that are focused on fitness and exercise. They will help you be encouraged and motivated along the journey, especially when things get tough!

*Set some long-term goals. What would you like to accomplish? How much weight would you like to lose (or muscle mass to build)? What kinds of foods do you need to start eating and stop eating? Find websites where you can research what kind of goal is achievable and reasonable. Many sites have places just for asking questions-this might be helpful if you can't find what you're looking for. Find out what kind of weight loss or muscle gain is reasonably possible within a certain length of time. Learn about diets or exercise plans that may be right for you, your schedule, and your goals.

*Don't set your goals too high or too low. You can hurt yourself by pushing yourself too hard, or crush your aspiration to meet your goals. Giving up is the very reason people are out of shape, so don't let unreasonable goals overwhelm you into quitting. Don't set your goals too low. Sure, it will be achievable, but very minimal exercise or change in diet will not really benefit you-at least not in a way that you will see results! Results are what will make everything worthwhile and encourage you to stay fit. Find websites about exercise or healthy eating where you can learn how much is too much or too little.

*Find a starting point your mind can grasp. If your ultimate goal is to lose 50-100 pounds or cut all sugary/fatty foods from your diet, you may be overwhelmed trying to tackle everything at once. Breaking habits and starting new ones is extremely difficult, especially when you're focused on too many of them at one time. If you give your mind one bad habit to break or one good habit to create, you will be more motivated to start and to stick with it. Focusing on that starting point will help drown out negative thoughts and discouragement.
