Pat Metheny has always been a guitar player who takes chances and this had gained him much fame and popularity. His music is kind of hard to classify as it spans so many different styles including jazz, folk, rock etc. His knew release is 'Orchestrion' which once again shows Pat exploring and also innovating.
An Orchestrion is a musical instrument that is a hybrid of percussion instruments, wind orchestra, and a piano that is played by a pinned cylinder. The instrument that is played on 'Orchestrion' was developed by Pat Metheny with the help of some very innovative inventors and awesome technology. The instrument is controlled by Pat using his guitar to trigger many different sounds. Using a computer program would have been a lot easier but Metheny wanted to capture the human element with the sounds.
It is amazing while listening to this record that it sounds so organic considering the mechanical nature of the instrument. The record consists of five pieces of music that span many different sounds. The drums and percussion really have a great sound and everything seems to seamlessly fit together. It is amazing that one person could create such beautiful, melodic music with a single instrument.
The five tracks never get stale and each tune seems to fit in with the next. This is a excellent effort from Pat Metheny and possibly the strongest solo material of his career. It seems to continue where 'Secret Story' and 'The Way Up' left off and is even more brilliant. This record will definitely exceed most fans expectations and should cement him as one of the most talented and innovative guitar players of this generation.
The upcoming tour for the record has already sold out several of the opening dates as eager fans scoop up tickets. Metheny has entered uncharted territory but in this case it is a good thing.
