Soho is the somewhat notorious party district of Hong Kong. The name is derived from its location: South of Hollywood Road and it arguably extends up to and including Robinson Road. One of the easiest ways of getting to SoHo is through the Central-Mid-Levels escalator. It is said that the very existence of Soho is attributed to the creation of the escalator system. The area consists of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, the art galleries and antique stores of Staunton Street and Hollywood Road, and residential housing. Hong Kong taxi drivers usually regard "Soho" to mean either Staunton Street or Elgin Street.

Like much of Hong Kong, this district treads a precarious balance between preserving the Chinese and colonial culture that shaped it, and recent modern developments. The escalator is a quintessential symbol of modernity which has encroached on the residential neighbourhood, bringing with it expats and the bars, cafes and boutiques which help cocoon some from Cantonese traditions.

Hong Kong's SoHo has also emerged as a great place for fine wining and dining in the last few years. The numerous up market eateries in the area, especially along Shelley, Staunton and Elgin Streets, offer a myriad of different international cuisines including French, Nepalese, Italian, Mexican, Portuguese and Indian, to name but a few. There is bound to be something for everyone!

Also commonplace in Soho are the Karaoke Bars and of course the usual bars. Prices in Hong Kong can be a bit steep when compared with prices in other parts of the world. But if you head out a bit early travelers can make use of the two for one happy hour offers. The nightclubs are usually packed with a lot party goers and usually make for an entertaining night out.

Though Hong Kong offers a lot of scenic beauty and cultural entertainment during the day, Soho is the best place to go to enjoy a good night on the town. Therefore it is important to stay in a place that offers easy access to Soho. Though there maybe a number of hotels in Hong Kong located near the area my recommendation would be to stay at Hotel Jen as it offers easy access to Soho and also to other areas of interest such as Victoria Harbour through a number of methods of transportation such as tram, bus and MTR.
