Paper Cups – An instant replacement to plastic cups

A century before when Hugh Moore invented paper cups, he fondly named them as “Dixie Cups”. Hugh Moore was so very fascinated by the name Dixie; he named the paper cups after it. Dixie cups aka paper cups were used for hygienic purpose. During those days, sharing drinking cups at public places were quite inevitable. It was also one of the reasons to accelerate the transmission of contagious diseases. An interesting research done at a school in U.S during those days revealed that the disease transmission among children was largely due to the re-usage of drinking cups.

Gradually when plastic cups came in to existence, it was a sudden hit at railway stations, theaters etc... The most obvious reason is ease of handling is simple and less expensive. But ecologist all over the world hit the headlines with “Control Carbon” slogan; the trend is reversed to use more eco friendly products such as paper cups. The good aspect about paper cups is it can be recycled and eco friendly.

I would like to recollect birthday party highlights of my niece. I was awestruck to see the decoration completely done with paper cups with her name impregnated on it. The ideas stuck me and I implemented at our office. I started to give gifts to our customers with our company logo on it. It really did `it’s own piece of marketing and we got a good recognition. Paper cups with a fancy design on it are a visual delight.

The demand of disposable and eco friendly paper cups is on the raise. This has created a great business opportunity in making paper cups. Paper cups can be manufactured at small level with the usage of low quality chemicals (a wax given in the interior of the paper cups). It is the normal tendency of buyers to get a stack of paper cups at an affordable price. But beware of the risk involved in buying such paper cups without any brand or company name on it. Even it is a one time use and throw, it can cause serious damage if low quality chemicals are used. The wax might dissolve when hot liquid is poured and unknowingly we might drink the beverage with the chemical dissolved in it. Some chemicals can be carcinogenic in nature.

The consumer must be aware that the manufacturing process of paper cups must conform to the usage of good machineries, quality chemicals and a standardized quality check. Care must be taken to buy from quality manufacturers rather than a randomized selection. It is for apt reasons paper cups are called as health cups but never buy low quality paper cups and spoil your tummy.

Discussion over a drink of coffee is the most sought out habit at any corporate and even family gatherings. Imagine if the disposable paper cups were not invented, it becomes cumbersome to clean up the mess. So thank Science for such small mercies and enjoy the delight of drinking in paper cups.
