There are a million of theories out there about our behaviour and how some occassions effect our lives. Some theories argue that whatever happens to us is caused by ourselves. This theory is written and directed in depth in the secret by Rhonda Byrne. Many people are inspired by this theory and Rhonda did a good job of having a lot of experts backing up her theory, and with those experts are experts that are not forgotten througout time. Consequently the theory holds.
According to the theory all things in life are connected. A great example in the book is that we all are some sort of antennas, what we broadcast is on a specific aerial frequency and only those who tune in on the same frequency get in life. It is also comparable with a magnet, that we only draw people or actions to us that are in line with what we ourselves are. Therefore we first must broadcast what we want to receive. Whether it is money, love, friends, or a dream car. Everything is in our grasp, as long as we are able to send out a positive signal to the universe that we really want it AND specifically not saying what we don't want. E.g. I do not want to have a small car should be I want to have a big car.
Now if you really believe in this theory (I like to think so) you would like to adapt your living behaviour in order to attract all that you desire. However, there are also theories in the psychological field that we are all predictably irrational. According to Dan Ariely we all do stuff that is irrational in a rational mindset. For example: Overcollecting: We like to stay attached to items that bring us memory. However, to the theory of Byrne we should only stay attached to those items with the mindset that in the future we are going to get even more desirable items. Also Byrne suggest we should have our live in order to attract those items, and with a house full of everything that we do not need anymore, we are not able to attract these from the universe.
Fortunately, like everything in life, we are able to come up with solutions for everything and are therefore responsible for our own fortune. As an example, we can stay attached to items and keep them around, and at the same time have an ordered, well-structured and welcomed live if we consider storage for example. Or just get a bigger house of course.
Furthermore, some of the theories are actually coherent. Like pre-owning items. According to Ariely we get attached to items when viewing them before we actually buy them. According to Byrne we are only able to attract these items if we really think of ourselves as current owners. Likewise theories? I'd like to think so.
