Often times mothers, whether single and doing it on their own or in a relationship offering support to their career advancement, find it very difficult to make ends meet financially. Living paycheck to paycheck is a way of life. In this economy we struggle with the question "Is this a want or need?" with needs always superseding wants.

My question to you is: does returning to school fall into the category of wants or needs?

Understandably going back to school is not at the top of most mothers to do lists due to the financial commitment it takes. In my household continuing my education and has always taken a backseat to the immediate needs. What I have failed to keep in mind while prioritizing my family's needs is the fact that if I had taken the time to finish my education I would be eligible for higher paying jobs and possibly even have the ability to set my own schedule so that I can work when it's convenient for my family.

Luckily, moms like me, are now being offered both financial options, and independent study options that make it possible for us to return to school. Government scholarships are now easily accessible to moms who qualify. In addition to this financial support from our government, independent study via online classes are offered at most colleges.

In the past most grants and scholarships did not allow independent study as an option for completing your educational goals. Now the Pell Grant, as well as most scholarship programs allow online learning and independent study as options to people who cannot attend classes on a regular basis.
