Head lice are natural parasites that live on the scalp of humans as well as on chimpanzees. These flightless, blood-sucking parasites are contagious and can easily infect others through direct contact if the person uses or wears clothing worn by someone who is infected. They are also extremely difficult to get rid of because the eggs (or nits) they lay are glued to the base of hair follicles.
Since Lice live mainly on the head and close to the scalp killing them has been a challenge. In fact, several years ago, many lice remedies were created but most of them have been found to cause more damage than the lice themselves. Today, more and more people have turned to natural head lice treatment to get rid of infestations. Below are a few of the main reasons why.
Health reasons
Many of the lice treatment shampoos include pesticides in their ingredients to kill lice. Even though these products are known to destroy the lice infestation many of the products used are associated with various health risk such as cancer, liver and blood disorders, and immune system disorders. This should cause caution when deciding to use these chemicals for head lice removal because of two things. First, the scalp is capable of high rates of absorption, which means that chemicals applied on the hair and scalp have a greater chance of being absorbed than chemicals applied on other parts of the skin. Secondly, most make use of pesticides and other toxins in an attempt to immobilize and kill the parasites. It is common knowledge that using the same products in shampoos to treat lice will cause your body to absorb these chemicals.
Natural head lice treatments are different in that they do not involve the use of dangerous chemicals and do not have the health risk of medications and shampoos. However, caution is still advised in taking or using natural head lice treatments. Some natural lice remedies can still be allergenic to some people.
Cost
In the case of head lice treatment, more expensive does not always mean more effective. Lice treatment shampoos and medications can cost you hundreds of dollars, especially if infestation keeps reoccurring. Prescription shampoos and medications are not nearly as cost effectiveness of natural head lice treatments. Some could even be free. That's because most of the materials you would use in natural treatment for lice can be found at home or are considered regular household ingredients and materials. They are easy to find and are more cost effective.
Effectiveness
This can be measured in several ways. First, if success means eliminating the adults, then most natural head lice treatments work as well as lice treatment shampoos. However, if the measure of success is the elimination of the nits or eggs, then natural head lice treatments might be more effective. Many medications both over the counter and subscribed such as head lice shampoo work to paralyze the lice but have little to no effect on lice nits because they are in a state of immobility already. Natural head lice treatment is mechanical in nature because they rely on sifting and smothering the parasites. These methods directly affect both the adults and the nits, thereby making them more effective.
