Life is faster now than ever it was and, although we have no end of so-called labour-saving equipment, we work harder too. When our ancestors came in from the fields, it soon got dark, they would eat and not having enough lighting or computers to play with, they would go to bed. We on the other hand, put the light on and keep going. Many of us only get adequate rest on the weekends and that is only if there are no children about. I am certain that you are familiar with the life style. Some people even require two jobs to make ends meet, thus exacerbating the problem.

The stress that all this work and activity produces is too much for some of those who have not learned how to relax. Recent studies indicate that stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease and thanks to the frantic lifestyle that people live today, heart disease is thought to be the number one killer in the United States of America. So, stress is one of the biggest killers these days. How will you take care of your family if you are dead? Insurance? Well, that is another bill that has to be footed. Exercise? OK, in moderation, but you are almost certainly already tired when you get in from work. What else is there? A few drinks? Again, all right in moderation. You could watch a film, I suppose, many people do.

Other ways of reducing stress are yoga and meditation. I liken yoga with exercise and most of the time I cannot be bothered when I get in from work. Meditation, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish. It is the next best thing to sleep. If you are meditating just to relax, you could have something light to eat when you get in from work, if you like; have a shower or a bath; put on some loose-fitting garments and start your meditation. You can eat again later, if you wish.

You will need to get a book in order to learn how to meditate correctly, but there are thousands of them out there, so that will not be a problem. The traditional pose for yogis when they meditate is the lotus position of crossed legs. However, Asians often sit like that when they are socializing too and learn it from an early age. They sit like that every day of their lives. Westerners, on the other hand, do not do those things, so I am sure that it is perfectly acceptable to get a comfortable chair.

There are specialized meditation chairs, which are not expensive. They provide a bit of padding and a bit of support for your back, but you could just as simply sit on a cushion against a wall. I think that the best meditation chairs are recliners. A comfortable reclining chair is an idyllic meditation chair for a Westerner, although if you want perfection, a reclining massage chair would be it for me. What do you reckon?
