Every once in a while, we would make the mistake of misplacing our keys and we would end up getting locked out of our homes or our cars; or perhaps we would accidentally get ourselves locked into a room somewhere. In situations like these, and if there is no professional locksmith to come to the rescue, being able to know how to pick a lock by oneself would come quite handy.

When attempting how to pick a lock, the point is to be able to open the lock without damaging it. The most typical kind of lock used is the pin-and-tumbler, which any experienced locksmith employing the right set of lock-picking tools can easily access. To open this type of lock, one must be able push up the set of key pins holding down its cylinder, enabling it to rotate and disengage the lock.

The two primary tools that are used for picking a lock are the pick and the tension wrench. The long and slender pick is inserted in the keyhole in order to operate the pins, and the tension wrench serves the purpose of applying pressure while the lock's cylinder is being turned.

For the first step in how to pick a lock, the tension wrench is inserted into the lower half of the key opening or keyhole. Then, it is up to the locksmith (whoever is picking the lock, that is) to figure out the direction in which the cylinder should be rotated in order for the lock to open. If one is familiar with the mechanism of the lock, then they should be able to know the right turn of the key. If not, it would be a matter of trial-and-error figuring out the right rotation.

If the cylinder is rotated in the wrong direction, a slight amount of additional tension is created. Using the tension wrench, a light torque must be applied in order to hold the cylinder. The pick is then slipped into the keyhole's upper portion, using them to reach for the pins. With the pick, the locksmith tries pushing the pins until they feel them springing down upon releasing the pressure. The tension of the tension wrench is adjusted as the tightness of the pins is being felt by pushing on them.

The key pins are pushed upwards with the use of the pick, while the tension wrench keeps holding the light torque up so as to prevent the pins from falling. The tension wrench is held tight and is used to gently rotate the cylinder in the right way and finally opening the lock.

Knowing how to pick a lock is a very useful skill to have in case of emergencies, but it can of course also be used for dubious purposes. Indeed, in order to acquire lock-picking tools, one must have the proper authorization and a truly valid reason for getting them. Legitimate locksmiths shouldn't worry, but those with less than honorable intentions should consider themselves duly cautioned, lest they end up testing their talents trying to open up a cell door.
