Light treatment is miles ahead

Cells in the skin and the eyes have been found to absorb light of different wavelengths. Substances such as the chemicals within the skin absorb the energy from light sources and can be used to produce desirable results within the human body by varying the type and intensity of the light energy. Photodynamic therapy comes in many formats and uses many principles. Laser and intense light of limited wavelengths is used to remove acne bacteria, fade scars and fight many other skin afflictions.

The use of photodynamic therapy for acne is nothing new. In ancient times, Egyptians found that sunlight was the cause of cure for many skin diseases, and that I helped clear the skin of boils and small scars from pimples. Modern science has since broken down white sunlight into its many-colored spectrum. It has been found that blue light, red light and dawn-simulation are the most effective types of light when it comes to any kind of therapy, whether for acne or SAD (seasonal affective disorder) depression.

Treating acne with blue light

Blue light therapy is the most commonly used and treatment for most types of acne, especially acne vulgaris, which is the most common form of acne. Clinical trials have shown that light of a wavelength of between 405nm and 425 nm (the visible spectrum of light which is the color blue, and which is a component of natural white light). This light reacts with the chemical Porphyrin in the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. The energy absorbed in-turn destroys the bacteria itself, helping reduce lesions and scarring. This treatment is an FDA approved procedure and requires no painful topical applications or expensive medicines. In some cases a photosensitizing agent is used on the affected skin surface so that light rays are more readily absorbed by the skin.

The treatment may be carried on for as long as it is required (this depends upon the intensity of the problem), however, sessions are usually limited to two or three a week and can vary from between 20 minutes to an hour. It involves clinical or home administration of intense light from a blue light source (special LED lamps are available for this purpose. Clinics use large powerful lamps which can be used for multiple types of treatment while smaller portable lamps can be used to treat acne at home).

Some severe cases of acne are also treated with a combination of blue and red light therapy. The red light kills bacteria and prevents the re-emergence of acne lesions.

Benefits of blue light in therapy

It contains no UV light, making it safe for the skin

It has no harmful or lasting side effects

It requires no expensive medication although it can be used in addition to medical treatment
