Everyday, not just during the holidays, homeless and jobless families are faced with the toughest of choices in our communities. Where to find food, shelter and assistance with any number of needed services. This isn't an issue that we can simply ignore. There are however organizations committed to helping those in need and they play an important part in the lives of those who need assistance. In the Quad Cities which consists of Moline and Rock Island on the Illinois side, Davenport and Bettendorf on the Iowa side there are several organization dedicated to helping those in need.

The Humility of Mary Shelter is a social action ministry established by the Congregation of the Humility of Mary located in Davenport, Iowa. It serves the greater Quad Cities area as well as surrounding townships. The Humility of Mary Shelter assists homeless and struggling families to stay together by offering support in the way of canned food, clothing donations as well as providing housing, educational support and social services until families are able to be self-sufficient.

In 1969 religious renewal swept through the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council and the Sisters of Humility were among the first communities to adopt a policy of self-determination. What may have seemed radical at the time was consistent with the community's founding philosophy that members would earn their own living and go wherever they saw a need. Today, each Sister of Humility is free to decide for herself which ministry she feels called to and is best experienced and qualified for based on her training and experience.

This self-determination has allowed the ministries of the Sisters of Humility to blossom as these visionary women can now use their personal talents and gifts in the service of God. Today you'll find CHM's in a diverse range of professions and positions that include library services, counseling, homeless services, medical assistance, education and multi-cultural ministries. Sisters are leaders, directors, administrators and management. Truly women with vision who can get things done.

In September of 2008 the John Lewis Shelter in Davenport, IA was faced with having to close its doors to the many homeless it was housing due to some poor business decisions which had left the organization badly in debt. The concern was that the many people living in the shelter would be left out in the cold especially with the winter months approaching. The shelter was weeks away from closing its doors forever. Many community organizations saw the importance of this shelter and the help it was providing and stepped forward to help with the Sisters of Humility taking over management of the shelter.

This holiday, please remember those less fortunate and help out anyway you can in assisting shelters with canned goods, clothing, monetary donations or even voluntering time to help. If we all pull together we can help people become self-sufficient again after falling on hard times. There are many organizations including the Humility of Mary Shelter which work towards helping members of the community who need assistance and by offering donations to these organizations we can provide assistance to the people who need it.
