Chapped lips happen because our lips lacked the oil glands to manufacture melanin, unlike other parts of our skin. Thus, our lips become vulnerable to chapping when under constant exposure to intense sun rays or freezing cold weather.

Chapped lips (cheilitis) are lips that seem dry, scaly, and may have one or more little cracks (fissures). Chronic chapped lips can be caused from nutritional deficiencies and dehydration, or over exposure to sun or cold and breezy conditions. It may be caused by the drying up of moisture. One of the worst habits that can cause chapping is constantly licking your lips. To combat chapped lips, many people are prepared by always having a tube of lip balm with them at all times. In addition to applying creams or balms, one of the most important things to remember is to stay hydrated.

Commonly found among people living under dry and humid weather condition or staying long hours in centrally heated or air-conditioned room. Those who suck or lick habitually on their lips are at risk too. Before going to outside, continue apply coat of lip balm that involve sun block. Lip balm can frequent supply temporary relaxation, though it should not be used thorough. Avoid caffeine ,smoking and alcohol which are large tissue dehydrators. Avoid phenol and camphor which are frequent create in lip balms. Phenol is a big anesthetic and camphor adds a cooling, tingling sensation which in the small term may bring temporary alleviate but could irritate already sensitive lip tissues.
