It is really great fun watching your new ferret playing, especially if you have more than one fuzzy to look after. But ferret care is so much more than just the right bedding, ferret food and cages.

Knowing your ferret's behaviour is essential when learning how to take of a ferret. They can do some pretty strange stuff, believe you me, so be prepared and know these 4 little nuances before you start

Backing into a corner

Now this one is a two sided behaviour.

First of all there is the 'frightened ferret' - Generally he will be backing up whilst hissing and showing you his teeth sometimes as well. You will clearly notice hiss hair is standing on end and he looks very 'puffed up'.

Do not try and approach him and tempt him out. It is the same as bravado amongst humans (Especially us men). Your ferret is trying to do exactly the same. So back off and let him calm down or he may attempt to nip you. Once he calms down I bet he will be all over you again for fuss and play in no time.

Secondly, there is the 'cross-legged' ferret - Pretty similar when you look at first. But, check and you will see the difference. Is his hair on end or is he trying to look bigger? If no then you bet your bottom dollar that he is about to use that corner as a litter tray.

This time I want you to act quickly. Pick him up and put him in his litter tray straight away.

Obsession

No I don't mean the Calvin Klein perfume. What I mean is your ferret becoming obsessed about a particular object or toy. Ferrets are famous for hiding things and secret stashes. It is just an extension of their wild behaviour. Car keys, money, and baby toys - I've seen them all go.

This behaviour in itself is nothing to worry about, you will just have to learn not to leave thing lying around. What you do have to make sure of is that whatever little fuzzy takes a shine too is safe for him to chew if he decides to.

The Pratt Fall

Now if you watch you little fuzzy carefully, you should notice that he has a habit of running into things. You may have the worst feelings inside that your ferret has a real problem with his eyesight.

Well don't worry, as ferrets actually don't have particularly good vision. The maximum distance they can see clearly is less than 2 feet. So when you see fuzzy run straight into the living room wall like a ferret Buster Keaton, do not be surprised.

If you are concerned then just get some lengths of foam on the most dangerous bits like corners. It really depends on how mad your ferrets are when they play

These are just a few of the fascinating ferret behaviours you need to know about when learning how to take care of a ferret.
