According to a recent Reuters report, as of February 7, 2008, approximately one quarter of all American women experience domestic violence. U.S. health officials also report that the women suffer from ongoing health issues which an activist compares to ..'like living in a war zone'. According to the CDC, about 23.6% of women in the United States have experienced some form of intimate partner abuse at some point in their lives. They further report that 1,200 women are killed and 2 million are injured in domestic violence annually. According to extensive research analysts, domestic violence victims particularly women, are 3 times more likely to participate in increased sexual promiscuity and of these , 70% are more likely to drink heavily. And again, as briefly mentioned above, in this study, women living in a domestic violent environment, 80% are more likely to have heart disease, and arthritis, while 60% are more likely to experience asthma. All of these health issues are no doubt, attributable to living in an abusive environment. Today, more law enforcement officals are held more accountable to protect women and children. This country has a long way to go yet, but at least today, these two classes of people are recieving awknowlgement from the judicial system that there does exist a serious, dangerous, ongoing problem. One half of all wife batterers, unfortunately, also regularly assault and abuse their children, accoding to M. Straus, R. Gelles, and C. Smith, "Physical Violence in American Families": Risk Factors and Adaptations to Violence in 8,145 Families, 1990" and U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, A Nations Shame: Fatal child abuse and neglect in the United States: Fifth report, Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, 1995.
Every 28 seconds, someone suffers abuse in this country-someone including women and children. One of the problems today is mothers (and occasionally, fathers), seem to be too trusting! Parents! Don't leave your children with people you don't know who are shady, lead a questionable lifestyle, or who just plain and simple, leave you with a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach! These are warning signs that something is wrong-really wrong. As a psychiatric RN, I can't begin to tell you the stories of countless victims of abuse that I heard over and over again in counseling. The reprecussions of abuse are often severe, and permanent, exhibiting features such as suicidal thoughts,self-harm/cutting,uncontrolled and displaced anger/rage,homicidal thoughts, drug addiction, sexual promiscuity(as previously mentioned), depression, and if untreated suicide, homicide, or both. This country has the highest rate of mental illness than any country in the world and this is a free decmocacy! What is wrong???? In many cases, without even knowin it, women attract abusive men. These predators seek out women who are single, single mothers, timid in nature, lonely, in trying situations, inexperienced women, young women, needy women. Sometimes our histories and lives play an important part in the way we portray ourselves to the world, and who we pull into our lives. Lonliness is a very difficult emotional state. This emotion is usually accompanied by sadness and hopelessness. Behaviors are frequently acted out when one is in this particular state of mind, and by now the damage begins. The predator has picked up on the signs that his next vicitm displays and then hones in, weaving a horrible net of destruction. Don't fret though! There is hope! It is never too late to get back on track! The key here is to love your self enough (and your kids!) to do something about your current situation. You have to want it-it being a better life, full of optimal health, minus mental, emotional, physical, and or sexual abuse! These dangerous and extremely vile behaviors mentioned above are not acceptable, no matter the reason. We have some life changing information that YOU need. This VITAL information is empowering. We are dedicated to your mental and physical health. You deserve a better future for yourself, your children, and those that you love!!
