How To Make Visits to The Doctor Much Easier For Your Little One

Visiting the doctor’s office can be quite a traumatic experience for quite a few children, this stress causes moms and dads to become anxious and stressed. Children are much like us and when they don’t know what is going to occur they get fearful. This fear then converts to some type of acting out. The amount of fear determines the degree of the drama. Removing the fear will take the drama away from going to the doctor’s office. Here are a few tips on how to prepare your child for a visit to the doctor’s office. But not the baby gifts.

Let’s Pretend. One way to explain situations to your children is by playing pretend with them. Make playing doctor fun for them. Buy a toy medical kit, a lab coat or scrubs and allow them to play dr. You may even buy some real Band-Aids, ace bandages, gauze and tape. Allowing them to fix there stuffed animal and dolls boo boos with genuine things again takes the fear away of the real dr's office. Books are another way to relieve your child’s fear about going to the doctors. There are plenty of books available today including a number from your child's favorite characters like Dora the Explorer, The Corduroy Bear and the Bernstein Bears. Your child will surely have fun reading the book and process the information about what to prepare for at the doctor’s.


What To Say. Ready your child for what could happen at the doctor office. Make sure that you are delivering everything in a positive way. Even young children know when you are not being honest, so keep away from the fake voice. Around three weeks from the doctor’s appointment start telling your child about his visit. This provides him time to process what is going to happen. Also do not use going to the doctors as a scare tactic. You by no means want to tell a youngster to behave or you will take him to pediatricians to get a shot. You should present the doctor as a good guy, in no way the evil villain. Then treat yourself to high quality baby boy gifts.

Stay Calm. Children are very good at picking up on your thoughts and emotions. So if you're nervous about going to doctors, your children are likely to pick up on that straight away. If you have a newborn then you'll be visiting the doctors a whole lot the first year, you will need eliminate your anxiety because babies are especially good and picking up on your feelings. If you have a hard time looking at blood or watching any type of medical procedure then you need to take an adult along with you that have the exam room with your child. You should not leave your child alone in exam room hoping the office staff can take care of your child while you pass out in the hallway. The individual you take along needs to be some one that child trust.


Children and Shots. Just like every child differs so is every parent. So what works best for one parent and child will not be the best thing for the next parent and child. With regards to children and shots there are several ideas and theories. If you feel your child might not want to watch the dr give them a shot, then it's perfectly fine to keep them distracted. You can bring a favorite toy or discuss what fun things you may be doing after your dr's visit. If your little one is one of those that want to watch the doctor, then definitely let them watch. Many moms think that nursing thier infant while getting a shot will keep little one distracted. It isn't really a good idea as the child may connect the shot and eating together. Most importantly is that you keep calm as the dr is examining and giving your child a shot. We do not want them picking up on our unease.

A little planning can go a long way in making your next visit to the doctors just an appointment and not the dramatic event of the month. PS Don't forget to get some reallt nice baby bibs.
