When applying for a job, you are probably wondering "how do I come across as unique, but not freak?" Good question. Most people's CVs are either boring and professional, or unique and scary.
For months I asked myself "how to do get unique without being scary?" Then one day while I was watching marketing genius Seth Godin do a keynote, it struck me. I realised that everything he said about marketing a product applied 100% to marketing yourself on the job market.
Using the 2 weapons concealed in this article, you will discover how to be the perfect blend: unique and professional.
It all started as I said on that fateful day when I saw Seth Godin's marketing keynote to Google: the marketing messiah who wrote "The Purple Cow".
The keynote was about how, if you are not a standout, no one notices you. Seth says two real standout things about how marketing has changed.
1. "It is at the edges that people will wait in line. It is at the edges that people will buy your product". He points out that Mini (and Hummer for a while) succeeded where GM did not, and no-one wanted any of GM's mid-range cars, cos they were unremarkable (ie: not worth making a remark about).
2. If you want people to love your product, you better love your product or no-one else is going to: we are in the era of emotional marketing.
That was when I realised that what he said applied 100% to the job-market, where the product is you.
So how does all this apply to you getting your dream job in any job market in any economic climate?
1. In the job-market you are the product. That means you must find reason to love you, or no-one else will. Learn job-interview techniques without getting clear on your own self-worth and people will smell through your lack of authenticity in a heartbeat, just like you do with insincere sales-people.
2. Traditional interview training and CV writing skills programs train you to be "above average". Traditional programs take you through training (based on 30+ year old paradigms including behaviourism). I contend that these have passed their used-by date, and my own experiments with these methods against emerging ones that Seth Godin talks about verifies this.
You must address questions of authenticity, emotional marketing, marketing yourself at the edges and how to achieve connection, not perfection. Otherwise, you will not stand out, and your results are left to chance because you are using the same approach that everyone else is.
Use these tips above, and you will be on your way to being "the purple cow": the one that gets noticed, gets employed and gets ahead.
