How to control panic attacks and take control of your life back.

If you've had a panic attack you understand the debilitating feeling of crisis that comes over you. You're short of breathe, your vision starts getting foggy then you can't move.

I never had a panic attack until my late thirties. I was vacationing in Sydney, Australia and I had ventured out on a plank over a lake. As I was turningaround to walk back to Terra firma my sight began to blurry, and I felt stuck to the spot where I stood.

Following that I was out of breath. A long while later I slowly edged my way back to terra firma, but if you do the following exercise, you'll be able to coach your body to conquer distress and panic attacks.

If you don't teach yourself how to restrain panic attacks then you run the risk of severe depression later in life. Take charge of your physiology by going through following directions right now.

Just like any exercise, it will become easier over time.

Take yourself to a safe place, your sitting room or your bedroom, some place quiet where you can feel completely at ease. You should even sit down in a good comfortable chair as this will aid you in releasing all the stress you feel.

- Next take note of your breathing, inhale gently and consciously in through your nose and out through your mouth. Slow deep breaths.

- Next you need to make a safe place in your brain. This might feel weird at first, but conjure up in your own mind the sort of place that you wish to be, doing the sort of things you like with the people you like.

- Go into as much detail as you can, think about what you are wearing, other people that might be with you. Your safe place could be a scene from your favourite movie or book.

- Create a plot of events and imagine yourself living in this safe place as the sort of person you would like to be. Again go into as much detail as you can. In mine I describe to myself the scent I am wearing.

Most significantly, when you have each detail drawn out completely in your imagination, really start to feel calm and satisfied and carried away to this place.

It's that straightforward. When you try it a few times you'll be able to go to your safe place no matter what your real life surroundings, as clearly you won't always have panic attacks in comfy chairs in your den.
