Not all life coaches are the same, and the right one for you may not be the right one for someone else. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a life coach.

References. When considering life coaches, ask if they have any former clients you could talk to about their experience with each one.

Chemistry. You'll be talking to your life coach about very personal topics, so a good connection is crucial. Always meet personally with a life coach before signing on.

The right background. Many life coaches come to the profession after years spent in another, and your life coach's background should prepare them to help you achieve your goals.

A full-time practice. It can take years for a life coach to become truly good at what he does. It's much better to hire someone who has been a full-time coach for several years.

A methodology that works for you. The better you know yourself, the better you'll be prepared to judge whether the coach you're considering has a working style that will match well with yours.

Certifications and credentials. Look for a coach with formal coaching education or certification.

Specific examples. When talking to life coaches, ask if they've had experience working with people who have goals similar to yours.

Anyone can call him/ herself a life coach. But not everyone can truly do it well. Investigate your options, and you'll be likely to find a good match.
