Assisted living is generally considered a compromise between in-home private care and nursing home care. It is for individuals that cannot function independently in the home, but do not need around the clock 24-hour care provided by nursing homes. Assisted living facilities provide supervision and assistance with assisted daily living activities such as administering medication, hygiene, and other personal care services.

If you are an employee and a caregiver, you are one of over 14 million people in the United States trying to stay afloat in a tumultuous sea of shifting personal and professional responsibilities. It is estimated that one in every seven employees is taking care of a chronically ill or elderly loved one.

Dealing with the patient's stiffness, speech problems, instability and inability to stand or walk, difficulty feeding himself, incontinence, etc. is hard enough even when you have help. Most people do not expect or think about facing the need of senior home care services for themselves or for a loved one. However, this is a good option to take when the unexpected walks through the door. It’s like a form of insurance against fire and flood but in a different category.

On the one hand providing care to an aging parent can be very rewarding. It brings the caregiver adult child and their parent closer together. On the other hand, increasing responsibilities ramp up caregiver stress and heightens tension within the family.

An assisted-living community provides communal living, often with planned activities, housekeeping and laundry, transportation, meals, exercise and wellness programs, opportunities to socialize with other residents, assistance with activities of daily living, and some medical care.

Life can be very stressful for an individual juggling the demands of a job and being a caregiver. Advancing within a career can often be put on hold since completing tasks at work can interfere with care giving responsibilities.

Essentially, an assisted living facility provides care for individuals who can no longer live independently but do not necessarily need round-the-clock care. More importantly, however, you must remember that an assisted living facility is not a nursing home nor can it provide the kind of medical care your loved one may require.

While it may take a while to find the right caregiver, interviewing and evaluating caregivers on more than just their ability to provide care can be beneficial.
