How Long Should It Take To Solve IT Problems?

The above question is almost on a par with the one about the piece of string. The ideal answer is of course ‘the shortest amount of time possible' but in reality things aren't always so simple.

The key to the answer lies in the efficiency of your IT employees and the resources they have available. Solving problems in the fastest time possible relies on having the right people in the right place with the right equipment to be able to do their job. If any one (or more) of those factors are not in place then there is a real chance that the whole process will take far longer than it needs to.

This is where a regular review of your IT support team and systems will be to your advantage. It's obvious that when a problem does occur you want everything to be back up and running as soon as possible. If things seem to be taking an inordinate amount of time it's vital to find out where the weaknesses are so they can be dealt with immediately. It may not have much of an effect this time round, but whenever IT problems crop up in the future you will know that the lessons learned from the previous event will lead to a much faster resolution this time around.

It's not always the case that you don't have the right equipment, knowledge, team members or tools to do what's necessary. Sometimes it's down to simple organisation - or the lack of it.

It could be that your company has grown large enough to warrant having its own IT department on site. If you are still outsourcing to try and cut costs this may backfire on you in a devastating way if you experience a major IT problem in the future. An on site IT support team can be at work solving the problem within minutes, while relying on an external source might see you at number six on the list of companies to be seen.

As always it's important to evaluate your needs ahead of time, but if you find yourself in the middle of an IT crisis then grab your chance to see just how long it really does take to solve the problem. When everything is resolved you'll have plenty of time to see where improvements can be made in the future.
