How does fluoride in water affect our body?

Introduction
Fluoride is a commonly known chemical added by water municipal corporation to help tooth decay for the mass. But is it really helpful or does it harms in one or the other way. Let us look further to understand the effects of fluoride in our body.
There are two types of fluoride: calcium fluoride that is found naturally in underground water and secondly sodium fluoride that is a byproduct of fertilisers, aluminium and nuclear industries. Although, if consumed in excess both these types can harm the body rather than protecting it
Most common form of fluoride added to water supply from corporation is sodium fluoride. As this water is already carrying other chemicals and metals like aluminium, calcium and lead, sodium fluoride mixes with these toxic metals to increase their effects on body.

Effects of fluoride on body

Numerous studies has been done on the effects of fluoride on body and it is found that this type of fluoride weakens the immune system and may damage the kidneys and liver. Let’s look at the list of some major diseases caused by sodium fluoride:


Increased lead absorption
Disrupts synthesis of collagen
Hyperactivity and/or lethargy
Muscle disorders
Thyroid disease
Arthritis
Dementia
Bone fractures
Lowered thyroid function
Bone cancer (osteosarcoma)
Inactivates 62 enzymes and inhibits more than 100
Inhibited formation of antibodies
Genetic damage and cell death
Increased tumor and cancer rate

There are numerous reasons that are raised against use of fluoride in water. Some key points are highlighted below:

Firstly, Flouride is not a nutrient that the body needs for its proper functioning.

Secondly, Once fluoride is added in water, it goes in everybody- may it be infant or elderly regardless of weight, height, age or need. There is no control on the quantity that goes within which leads to various diseases that may be visible in long run.

Thirdly: If it is treated as a drug, then a prior consent from medical fraternity needs to be taken however, the point to be noted here is that it is classified as an unapproved drug by FDA.
