Hot start fizzles for Tiger in PGA's final round Part 1

Top-ranked Tiger Woods got the start he wanted but couldn't sustain it Sunday in the final round of the 92nd PGA Championship. He birdied three of the first four holes then struggled coming in to shoot a 1-over-par 73(callaway x-24).

Woods finished at 2-under 286 and tied for 28th, nine strokes behind winner Martin Kaymer of Germany.

"Man, I striped it early," said the four-time PGA champion. "I didn't miss a shot for the first four holes. And then after that, I hit it awful."

Given how poorly he played(callaway x-24 irons) the previous week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational - where he tied for 78th, the worst 72-hole showing of his professional career - his performance at Whistling Straits was encouraging.

"I feel my game is a lot better than it was obviously last week," Woods said. "And given a little bit more time(callaway x24 hot irons), it's starting to head in the right direction."

Woods had high hopes for the major championships this year and contended in three of the four(callaway x24 tour). He tied for fourth in the Masters and U.S. Open and tied for 23rd at the Open Championship.

"Disappointed, certainly," he said. "In order for it to be a great year, you have to win a major championship. I won six times last year, and it was a good year, but it wasn't a great year."

Conditions were sunny and breezy, and thankfully, heat and humidity declined for the first time all week.

The front nine was a roller-coaster ride for Woods, who was paired with Tim Clark of South Africa(callaway x24 clones). He made four birdies, three bogeys and two pars.

At the par-4 first, Woods stiffed his short approach shot for an easy birdie. At the par-5 second, he came up just short of the green in two and nearly holed a long eagle putt, settling for birdie. Woods missed the green to the right at the par-3 third, failing to get up and down after missing a 15-foot putt.

Woods has struggled all week on the par-5s and did again at the 598-yard fifth hole. He drove into a right fairway bunker, then blasted out into thick rough on the right(callaway x24 clones). Woods failed to reach the green with his third shot but was able to putt from just off the putting surface, rolling the ball three feet from the cup to salvage par.

He made a mess of the short par-4 sixth, missing the green right. His second shot flew over the green, his third came up short, and he managed to get up and down to salvage a bogey.

Woods bounced right back with a slick iron shot at the 221-yard, par-3 seventh, the ball finishing 12 feet from the cup. He rolled it in for fourth birdie on the side.

At the long par-4 eighth, Woods found the fairway and knocked his second shot on the right fringe, 50 feet short of the pin. He hit a beautiful lag putt within two feet of the hole and saved par.
