Summer is here and, as usual, a whole new wad of standout summery trends for men are hitting the retail shelves. Unfortunately not all of us can afford to overhaul our whole previous summer wardrobe, but with a few key pieces you can update your look and stand out in dapper summer style.

A big but oh so simple tip for summer, is to freshen up a whole outfit with a new, top quality white cotton t-shirt which will go with anything and everything, and freshen up a whole outfit. Drape a faded 1950s ‘vacation’ shirt over the top, for extra kudos. Cotton printed tees are an all time summer staple, but this season look out for pastel colours in tangerine, mint, and mauve.

Chambray shirts were a standout last season and they are here again for round two. You can get tailored or loose fitted, with pockets or without, short sleeve or long, but no matter what you go for, this faithful shirt guarantees to suit any summer occasion.

Give the jeans a break and dress up your summer look with a pair of earthy coloured chinos. Chino’s are pants made of strong cotton fabric, with a tapered leg, and are perfect for refining your summer look, while keeping it casual.

Mens shorts are also huge this summer. Prep them up ‘yacht club’ style with the length just above the knee and a small cuff at the bottom. Keep on trend with pastels, patterns and even stripes.

For those of you whose summer school holidays are a happy but distant memory, and the nine to five office still summons, well-tailored suits in summery fabrics such as cotton and linen, in light colours like khaki and light blue, are big business this season. Pair with a relaxed patterned shirt underneath and you can head straight to a night out when the day is over.

When it comes to footwear, espadrilles in natural fabrics and colours are the summer must have, very casual cool. Believe it or not, the gladiator sandal has made it on to the list for men’s summer fashion this season. Huge in women’s fashion for the past few seasons, if you can pull off this strappy classic, then you’re a braver man than most. If the Roman look is not to your taste, and let’s be honest, it’s a tough one for some to do, stick to a pair of boat shoes or loafers, worn sockless, so as to expose the ankle.

As with last season, accessories are immense, although this year it’s more about having a few quality pieces rather than an overzealous quantity. Channel the nautical look with braided or rope belts, embrace the native trend with a lightweight Aztec snood, or Navajo patterned rucksack. Top any look off with an open weave straw trilby and a pair of vintage style sunglasses, along the lines of Ray Ban club masters.

Men’s summer fashion is all about loose (but not baggy!) airy fabrics, laid back style and cool colours and by investing in a few key seasonal items, you can be sure to look the part this summer.
