Honouring one of the most important figures in St. Lucia, Sir John Compton was the subject of a massive celebration on the 29th of August 2009. The date is significant in that it was on the very day Sir John left his home of Canouan for St. Lucia to pursue his education. It was this action that set him upon the path to greatness.
A variety of prominent figures attended the memorial to pay their respects to Sir John Compton. Dignitaries included current Prime Minster Stephenson King, Dr. Ralph Gonzalez Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and family friend Sir James Mitchell. Other attendees also included the former Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Arnim Eustace.
Sir Compton's wife, Lady Janice honoured her late husband with a heart warming speech that highlighted his emphasis on clinging to his roots and his lack of malice to others. Lady Janice in an interview conducted afterwards expressed her feelings on how it was fitting to have Sir Compton's ashes reside in Canouan. She commented that it a tying together of Sir John's beginning and end.
The atmosphere at the church was an uplifting one and all those present recognized Sir Compton's incredible contribution to politics regardless of whether they agreed with his stance.
The Prime Minister of St. Lucia credited Sir John's role in not only inspiring but also catapulting him in to politics by selecting him to serve as a Senior Minister.
To mark the event and to serve as a reminder of Sir John Compton's dedication towards education, a PA system was donated to the School in Canouan by Lady Janice.
The memorial took place at the Anglican Church in Carnege Canoun where Sir John Compton was born. The beautiful renovated church is located inside the ‘Raffles Hotel Canouan Island, The Grenadines'. The presence of this church provides a marked distinction in comparison to other
