When your financial needs change, giving your car back to the bank may seem like an easy and fast way to solve your money issues. This will have a long lasting condition on your credit report, that you may regret later. Not only that but your lose the money you put down on the car including the money you have already paid thus far. The bank has an obligation to sell the car, and if they do not get what the loan amount is owed they will come after you for the rest of the amount owed on the loan.

Don't give your car up! Try lowering your monthly payments.

Here are a couple of suggestions to help you keep your car.

Refinancing your car through your current lender is one way you can lower your payment. Ask them if they can lower your interest rate, this over the term of your loan will lower your car payment. See if they will extend your loan from a 48 month to a 60 or 72 month loan. Lenders like to extend the loan as that means more money for them. You will, however end up paying more for you vehicle in the long run. That doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing, later down the road you may be able to make extra payments and pay your loan off earlier than you anticipate.

You can shop around for other lenders with lower interest rates providing your lender will not work with you. Applying for a personal loan in another option you can take. Personal loans usually have lower interest rates than an auto loan.

Trading your car in for a lesser expensive one is another option you can take. Driving a used car with a lower payment maybe better for you, this way you don't have the financial burden and/or stress on your shoulders.

Getting another form of income will be beneficial in making your payments on your car. Giving up a couple of nights or a weekend here and there in order to help your financial needs and keep your car is better than the alternative of not having a vehicle.
