For those of us who have long since stopped being children, it's always interesting to look at the latest toys that are available for kids. New helicopter battle games have been a big hit. I thought I'd try some out to see what all the fuss is about!

When I was growing up in the 1970s my toys were often made up of toy cars, Lego bricks, football sets and Star Wars figures. Each of them were brilliant as far as I was concerned. Although there may have been more expensive alternatives available, simple toys left plenty of room for imagination.

That imaginative factor is most of the fun when it comes to child's play. It's amazing how quickly simple objects can be turned into integral parts of a game - one minute something is a simple cushion being used by adults; the next minute it's a spaceship or a bus!

Since I do place so much emphasis on imagination, I've always wondered just how much better more expensive, more complicated toys and games can really add to the experience. Now was my chance to find out.

If you've not seen any of these helicopter battle games then here's a quick overview.

They are currently being sold by a number of manufacturers and in various stores. They're relatively easy to get hold of, although their popularity has led to stock shortages for some retailers.

I purchased a set by a leading manufacturer. The Sky Challenger helicopter set included 2 helicopters, as well as 2 remote controls. The remote controls have rechargeable batteries, which were also supplied.

Before you can use the helicopters you need to charge them up - this is done by plugging the helicopters into the remote controls. It takes about 15 minutes to charge them up. This then allows for about 10 minutes or so of playing time.

Once the choppers are charged, battle can commence! The game is best with two players - one controlling each helicopter. It's quite difficult to keep your machine in the air but even more so when you realise that this is a game with a twist - you can fire at your opponents helicopter!

In effect, shooting has the effect of briefly jamming the signal between your opponent's remote and helicopter. That makes it even more difficult for them to control.

I have to say that I thought it was great fun. The helicopters were durable, although I would say that they do need quite a bit of space in order to operate properly.

Were they better than my old, simple toys? Maybe not, but they were still great fun!
