Business and financial media is often dominated by the austerity measures being undertaken in countries that belong to the Eurozone and as the volatility of the Euro as a currency intensifies, some might think it a good idea to avoid the region when looking at a map and deciding where to holiday in 2013.

But that could be an error for holidaymakers based in the UK, Australia, Canada and the U.S. as it's cheaper now to visit those countries in the Eurozone as their domestic currencies have strengthened against the Euro and this could be the best time for a long time to visit financially - for Australians for example their Dollar is buying 40% more Euros than just a few years ago.

There's going to be plenty of availability on the Greek Islands where the number of German people booking a trip there has halved from this time last year, leaving a lot of hotel rooms to be filled over the year ahead. Crete, Corfu and Kefalonia have all been popular in recent years and there is no hostility because of the Euro crises to tourists from Australia, Canada, the U.S. and UK.

Thomson for example offer accommodation only deals. At the moment they are offering an apartment for a week in Halkidiki for 240 Euros, and at the same price an apartment for a week in Lardos on the island of Rhodes. For ten Euros more there are options for both Corfu and Crete.

If you live outside of Europe and this would be your first visit and you're not sure where to go, a good idea is to fly into London and spend a couple of days seeing the sights - flights out of the UK to popular European holiday destinations are cheap and can be booked online in advance, and you will get the benefit of a trip to London as well as a holiday in Europe.

Not sure where to take a vacation? A good question to ask is where Europeans holiday - many would have visited a lot of different places and the most popular destinations don't become that by accident, especially in today's world with online reviews accessible to anyone with the internet.

The most popular vacation island in the Mediterranean is Majorca. There's something for everyone when you look at a Majorca map in the different towns and villages. If you're ideally after low cost and a lively nightlife have a look at accommodation in Magaluf and Palma Nova. Flights are plentiful and cheap from most UK airports.

If you prefer a more genteel pace try Pollensa, there's a good number of houses and apartments available for rental here, and on the other side of the island Soller Port will give you an authentic Mediterranean fishing port that has good bars and restaurants along with a beach to enjoy.

Majorca is one of the Spanish Balearic Islands and neighbouring Ibiza is a mecca for those who like dance music and clubbing while Menorca is a favourite among Europeans who are after a family vacation - all are well served by the low cost airlines operating from the UK and Germany.

Another group of islands to consider is the Canary Islands, again Spanish and geographically nearer to Africa, so with a great all year round climate they are suitable for holidays in the winter, spring and autumn as well as for summer vacations.

The three main islands popular with tourists that have a good range of villas and apartments as well as hotels to choose from are Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. All have resorts suitable for varied groups, with good beaches and are easy to get to by air from the UK and European mainland for connecting flights from Australia, Canada and elsewhere.

There's some great places to vacation in Europe - and if it's at low cost it's even better of course for the tourist wanting their trip there.
