The term glam came to us from the 1960s, and it is simply a short word for "glamour". Glam rock (some people call it glitter rock) became popular as a style of pop and rock music, in the post-hippie early 1970s, the time of changes and sexual freedom. Initially, music was rather simple with crunchy guitar rock put across with outrageous theatricality. Later, it became more diverse.
Top Glam Bands and Musicians: Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Britny Fox, Cheap Trick, Def Leppard, Dokken, Enuff Z'nuff, Europe, Faster Pussycat, Guns N Roses, Great White, L.A. Guns, Iggy Pop, Kiss, Kix, Mr Big, Motley Crue, New York Dolls, Poison, Quiet Riot, The Runaways, Ratt, Scorpions, Skid Row, Slade, Sweet, Tesla, Trixter, T.Rex, Van Halen, Vixen, Warrant, White Lion, Whitesnake.
Glam fans ("glitter kids") and musicians had a very distinguished look. Their clothes varied from the glamorous to the outrageous. The style came from a mixture of transvestism, futurism, and homosexuality styles. Both men and women wore alien-style silver costumes, tight pants, high platform shoes, had died hair, heavy make-up, lots of glitter, and decorated themselves with feathers. They did all they could to stand out of the crowd. High platform shoes were especially hot. Elton John made them a firm fixture with men and women. He is a short man and wore them on stage to look both taller and sexier. Queen wore the highest platforms ever. The only exception was Marc Bolan, who liked to wear ballet pumps to demonstrate his delicate frame.
This style has not been forgotten. Many designers use its elements in their new collections.
