A family run cruise line, Fred Olsen, has now been running for over 40 years. However, the business originally operated fifty-ton wooden Norwegian schooners, back in 1848. The Grandson of Fredrik Christian Olsen established the Olsen name as one of the most important Norwegian shipping lines. In 1896 under the company name of A/S Bonheur he purchased the first steamship.

In 1926, the Brabant became the first noteworthy Fred Olsen passenger ship. 1951 the Blenheim took her maiden across to Newcastle from Oslo ,and two years later followed the Braemar. The ships were very eye-catching in those days. Compared to the larger ships operated by Fred Olsen these days, they were much smaller ships.
