Is your dog jumping when he (or she, but for sake of simplicity, I'll refer to dog as 'he') is playful or has lot's of energy? Did he embarrassed you when he started jumping in a public place or maybe even leg-hop one of your friends? If so, you're not alone! Here's few tips how you can stop your dog jumping.
* Start with obedience training command 'sit' or 'down'. This is direct opposite from up so he will learn that sitting down or laying next to your legs is also cool. If you give him a snack every time he does it right, he'll know sitting is way better then jumping.
* If you see him getting energetic and is showing signs he might jump, calm him down with soft speaking while gently pulling the leash. Make sure your voice and actions are calm or he will think he is being punished. If he calms down, give him a snack or show him he's done right.
* Avoid noisy neighbourhoods. If there's little or no outside activities, there will be less reasons for your dog to get distracted. If you can, go out to the country. Also, try to avoid meeting dominant or/and stronger dogs.
* Walk your dog regularly! Give him a chance to get tired. Let him run around where you're alone. Being tired (you'll know this when his tongue is hanging out, which means he is hot and must cool down), he is less likely to jump around. On the other side, if you keep him inside he'll go crazy when outside.
I know how dog jumping and leg-hopping can be annoying, especially in public places. Use this four tips to get you started and then watch what works best and repeat it. Bribing your dog with occasional snacks can work wonders too. You might also be interested in how to become a dog trainer and train your dog properly.
