When you're an adult child who lives out of state, it can be tough to find the perfect gift—your dad's interests now may be different than they were when you were a kid. Here's how to find out what your dad really wants for Father's Day.

Consider his hobbies. Take a cue from your dad's hobby by buying him something to go along with it.

Talk to Mom. Check with your mom to see if there's a restaurant your dad particularly prefers, a store he likes, or an activity such as golfing or sailing that he's been dying to start.

Listen. Pay attention when you're on the phone or in conversation with your dad—he's probably dropping hints, even if he doesn't realize it.

Consider your history. Remember when you were young, you used to go to a certain area every summer for vacation? Get your dad a T-shirt, hat, or some other tourist item from that area to remind him of old times.

Something from childhood. Go through old photo albums and look for a particularly cute picture of your dad holding you as a baby. Get it blown up and buy a nice frame for it.

Gifts from the heart are always the best kind, and If you do get a gift certificate for a restaurant, game or activity, don't just give it to your dad—join in the fun. The best gift you could give your dad is time spent with you.
