There is a misconception when promoting a website that the more traffic that is generated the better. While there is an element of truth to this it is far more important that the traffic generated is targeted carefully to maximise the chance of any visitors becoming customers. When embarking on a search engine optimisation campaign it is vital to fully understand this before choosing the keyphrases to target and beginning the optimisation process.
It can be tempting to select keyphrases that are either very general and/or vague, as these tend to have a huge volume of searches per month. The downside of using general search terms is that the searchers could be looking for anything related to the term, they could be looking for information, a product or even a forum to discuss what they were searching for. Having a high ranking result for a term like this will typically result in larger quantities of traffic but the bounce rates are also exceptionally high. This will likely negate the increase in traffic and undermine the amount of effort used to rank for a competitive general keyphrase. Conversely it can be easy to fall into the trap of finding a keyphrase that has very little or very weak competition; in this case it could be easy to achieve a high ranking
In reality striking the perfect balance between these two situations is arguably the most important step in SEO. Selecting keyphrases that bring in traffic targeted to exactly what the website offers will reward the website with a far lower bounce rate (the number of visitors that instantly leave a website after entering) and a higher percentage of visitors becoming customers or clients. Websites also need to continually to analyse how effective each keyphrase is and be willing to both remove those that are bring worthless traffic and add phrases similar to those that are bringing in sales.
After struggling to get as much out of my website as I thought I could I decided to look into local
seo companies. Eventually I found a company providing SEO services and
web design Edinburgh.
Overall it is important to bring a large volume of traffic to a website, but only if that traffic is specifically targeted and likely to be converted into sales. Spending time researching and selecting keyphrases, and being prepared to change and adapt based on which are performing well will provide an excellent base from which to launch an SEO campaign.
