Harvesting a crop of impressive sized tomatoes starts with knowing how to grow big tomatoes.
Choosing a variety of tomato plant that produces huge tomatoes is critical to your success. You want to something like the "Delicious" that Gordan Graham grew to a whopping 7 pound 12 ounces, or one of the many "Beefsteak" varieties. There are actually quite a few different strains of tomatoes that will grow huge, most of them are indeterminate types.
Growing big tomatoes requires good soil. Make sure it's well worked with proper fertilizer, but be careful not to add too much nitrogen or you will end up with a bunch of leaves and little fruit
Select a location that gets plenty of sun. Tomatoes need heat and sunlight so try to avoid placing them where they will be shaded by trees or buildings.
Tomatoes like deep watering so except when you plant them avoid over watering. Instead of sprinkling them every day, water them once or twice a week with a soaker hose.
When you transplant your tomatoes to the garden trim off the bottom branches and plant as deeply as possible. Unlike most plants tomatoes will grow roots from the part of the stem that is underground.
Planting deeply ensures a strong root system. If the plants are too long and spindly you can lay them out horizontally with just the top forage out of the ground.
Space your tomatoes at least two feet apart from each other. If you overcrowd them by trying to get too many into a small area you will end up with less fruit that is smaller.
Pruning any new shoots that grow between the main branches and the stem while being careful to not remove the flowers will help your plants grow fruit instead of spending it's energy growing leaves.
If you want a few large tomatoes, rather than a large number of smaller ones, remove all but the largest tomato from each cluster. This will allow your plants to spend their energy on a few tomatoes rather than spreading it out on a lot of them.
It's still going to take a lot of luck and a little patience, but now that you know how to grow big tomatoes you just might be able to grow a whopper that will beat the world record.
Consider saving tomato seeds from your biggest tomatoes so that you can use them to grow tomatoes from seed next year.
