Fear Of Vomiting

Emetophobia is the persistent and extreme fear of throwing up in public. Emetophobic folks experience intense fear that persists even when vomiting is very unlikely. Emetophobics could never vomit in public yet continue to fear the possibility.

Signs of a phobic fear of vomiting include:.

Fear of vomiting is usually triggered by a childhood incident that included vomiting. Over time, the fear of vomiting becomes more general and easier to trigger. People who fear vomiting begin to avoid any trigger which may provoke vomiting. Avoidance of situations that include food and drink will take over a person's life. Fear of vomiting can become a heavy problem. People who fear vomiting soon find themselves living in a shrinking world.


Fear of vomiting is a specific type of mental disorder known as a phobia. A phobia typically starts as a rational fear reaction to a traumatic incident. Over time, the fear becomes more general and problematic. An untreated phobia will grow into a panic disorder. A panic disorder is marked by recurrent attacks of paralyzing fear.

Panic attacks look very much like heart attacks while they are not physically dangerous. Doctors cannot even tell the difference without resorting to medical testing.

Early diagnosis leads to rapid relief of fear of vomiting. Fear of vomiting won't go away without treatment, however recovery is not complex.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is another effective treatment for fear of vomiting. CBT is a way of changing how the emetophobic perceives his or her environment.


CBT is affordable and short-term and focuses on results. Insurance often covers CBT because it is so effective and short-term. Paying for CBT is typically not difficult, even when insurance is not an possibility.

Today, nobody needs to continue to suffer from fear of vomiting. Early treatment leads to complete recovery. Treatment usually turns even severe cases around fast.
