The Wrestler is not a wrestling movie. If you are not fond of the circus like atmosphere of professional wrestling, don't worry. This movie is so much more. There is some wrestling in there of course, but the main drama is all about what life has done to Randy The Ram, played by Mickey Rourke. He is worn out and used up from life in the ring. And is having a very hard time of letting go of this all encompassing life. Randy has put himself in a place that is unhappy and forlorn. He is at a tough emotional crossroads and needs to figure out who he is.
He works at developing a closer bond with those around him, such as his stripper girlfriend, played by Marisa Tomei. She is suffering through a similar turmoil herself, becoming too old for the profession she is in as well. Their connection is well developed and believable. Throughout the film, he also has some very touching scenes with his on screen daughter, Evan Rachel Wood. He has not been there for her throughout her life, and is working hard to establish a real relationship with her.
This fictional movie is about true life in all its many aspects and dimensions. It is emotional and expressive. The Ram is Mickey Rourke. You are so drawn into his performance that the ram becomes an actual person, not a part played by an actor.
There is more than romance and relationships. Randy does get down and dirty in some physical encounters. He throws down with some wrestling bouts involving the men who own the market where he buys groceries and the park where he rents his trailer space. The fighting doesn't bring the movie down, it keeps it streaming along.
The Wrestler has it all! There's the action of fighting, The drama of love and relationships, and the feel good of hope. The acting and directing are incredible. It is a must see for fans of either Action or Drama style movies. Whether you are into wrestling or not will not affect your enjoyment of this film. Everyone will find something they like about this movie.
