Over the past few years, the Internet has become the ultimate source--for everything. People are meeting online and forming life-long partnerships. Unfortunately, people are also meeting online and getting scammed, or even hurt.

Finding that perfect someone is difficult, especially when we all seem so busy. Who has time? So, people turn to online dating, hoping to connect with a person who could be Mr. or Ms. Right. In the beginning of online dating, finding people wasn't so difficult, because not many sites were available. Now, there are numerous online dating sites, for all races, cultures and beliefs.

Millions of single persons are searching for a date, a companion, and/or a spouse. There are so many people that searching one of these sites takes an incredible amount of time. So, how do you streamline the process?

With all the weirdos and crazies out there, anyone searching online needs to cautious. At least one online site requires background checks of all its members. It might be a pain to fill out, and wait for the results before becoming a member, but understand that these checks help weed out the dishonest, and the disinterested.

Once you determine which site or sites you want to join, understand exactly how the searches are run. With so many millions of single people dating online, if you don't understand the search parameters, you could get millions of hits. Try using a keyword, or two or three, to narrow your search.

In addition, there are millions of single people utilizing these myriad of online dating sites. Do NOT do a general search. You'll get millions of hits, and that's not going to help you. Know what characteristics are important to you in a partner and through keywords or questionnaires, search on those parameters.

For instance, if only want to date blacks, make sure to spell that out. If you require a certain culture or religion, say that, too. Even the smaller traits can help narrow your search, and possibly save you some irritation in the future. Remember, you're hoping to find a life partner. If he or she is a slob and you're a neat freak, you may be able to tolerate it in the short term, but what about the long-term affects?

These are small things, to be sure, things that are often tolerated or overlooked during the first blush of love. These same things, though, if repeated over and over, can be a source of strife and arguments several years down the road.

In addition to offering keywords and searching on specific characteristics, one online dating site performs background checks on all their clients as a requirement of membership. This is a service to protect customers and the public from criminals, and from liars and cheats. Many argue the background check is a pain, but consider that this requirement will weed out people who are just playing at online dating, and those who could be dangerous.

Dating online can be time consuming and frustrating, especially if you aren't honest about your needs, both to the site and to yourself. Get out there and do some research. Then make a list of what you want. As the saying goes, knowledge is power. Use it!
