At the centre of American history Boston is renowned for its educational institutions and its wide variety of museums, galleries and libraries.
Visiting this beautiful New England city is best done during autumn. The trees are just starting to turn various shades of red and gold and the skies are clear and bright.
Boston is home to more than 50 colleges and universities, which means the population is highly-educated, young and outward looking. The most famous of these is Harvard University. Founded in 1636, this beautiful ivy-covered building has four fabulous museums including the Harvard Art Museum and the Museum of Natural History.
There are two walking routes that have now become local attractions. Firstly, there is the ‘Freedom Trail' that charters the city's part in the revolution and the ‘Black Heritage Trail' that follows Boston's role in abolishing slavery.
Both of these trails start from the Boston Common Park, the oldest public park in the US, and thanks to Boston's small size are short and easy to follow. The Freedom Trail will pass by key sites in America's fight for independence from the British.
Massachusetts was the first state to abolish slavery and the Black Heritage trail takes you through Beacon Hill one of the first communities of free blacks in America. You will pass the memorial to Robert Shaw, a prominent anti-slavery campaigner and Boston resident.
Boston is famous for a certain ‘Tea Party' and you can learn more about this important historic event at the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum. The ship is a replica of the original but it's still a remarkably interesting attraction and immortalises the patriots rebellion against the British over increased taxes on tea.
Across the Charles River, is Cambridge and although usually lumped together with Boston it is actually a city in its own right. Over 30,000 students live here and attend either Harvard or MIT. A great place to have coffee and wander through book stores and antique shops is around Harvard Square.
Boston is home to highly successful sports teams including the Red Sox for baseball, the Celtics for basketball, the Bruins for hockey and the New England Patriots for American football, so you must check out at least one match whilst you're here.
