How to Build Your Vocabulary With an ESL Program
A couple of years ago, I had a Grammar teacher who developed a brilliant and amusing way to show us that nouns are the core of language. She did this by telling us a complete story using just nouns, leaving out verbs, adjectives, articles, adverbs, pronouns, and linking words. The story was something like this: "Boy, girl, party, dancing, drinks, car, hotel." A warm laughter extended inside the classroom, and surely, no one needed an explanation. That simple list of words (which could have been about a car accident, but happily wasn't) had everything a text needs to be called a tale, in agreement with the classical meaning: unity and a theme. The conclusion: to develop your vocabulary, begin by knowing nouns. Adjectives will come by themselves, and they will seek their nouns alone. Furthermore, the majority of the time you won't even require them, because nouns contain their very private connotations, like in the story. That's why nouns are amid what we call content words (adjectives also, yet, attempt to tell a tale using just adjectives and see what happens).
Obviously, learning vocabulary isn't just about writing down words in a list. Visualizing countable or uncountable nouns does not mean a thing if you don't have a clear circumstance that you connect with them. To start, you have to come across a word you don't know, in a given situation, and next you can hunt for its meaning in the dictionary.
Nevertheless, if you enjoy searching for arbitrary words in the dictionary, it is a pleasant and entertaining manner of acquiring vocabulary. Utilize a monolingual dictionary. Try this: after analyzing the meaning of a word in a monolingual dictionary, attempt to guess what the word is in your native language. It can take you some time, but keep going.
If you get pleasure from reading books, do not interrupt the reading every time you find a word you don't know. It is more important that you continue reading the full chapter or story. While you do it, underline the words you don't know and search for them when you finish. If you don't get pleasure from books, you must think of something you enjoy reading: there are magazines, newspapers, all of them great resources of great vocabulary.
Vocabulary isn't something that will remain by itself. Our brains normally fail to remember words we seldom use, to make space for new ones. The bottom line is: make sure you come in touch with vocabulary every day. You can choose amid numerous activities that can assist you, however, reading is necessary.
