Having been the local authority region of Scotland from 1973 to 1996, "Grampian" is divided to3 main local authorities as Aberdeen shire, Aberdeen, and Moray. Aberdeen is the 3rd largest city in Scotland and is home for more than 40 percent of Grampian's population. Grampian is one of the largest regions in Scotland which spreads through an area of 8700 square kilo meters housing over half a million population by 2001.
The region is well known for its large number of mountains and mostly in South, vast range of huge rocks are the shelters for hundreds of sea bird flocks. The name "Grampian" is has firstly applied to its mountain range in 1520 and according to Roman historians an adaptation of the mane Mons Graupius has been made and during the Middle Ages the area was known as the "Mounths". The mountains of Grampian extend from southwest to northeast and Lochaber and Cairngorms hills, which lay on the Highland Boundary and Gleann Mòr, are more famous among mountaineering people. And "Ben Nevis" of 1344meters, which happens to be the highest peak of British islands also located in this mountain range. Most of the mountains in the region are comprised with marble, granite and gneiss.
Aden Country Park and museum in Aberdeen shire is popular for its annual pipe band contest which the all pipe bands from all over Scotland. The country mansion house which has been ruined during the Second World War can be seen there. Aden Park can be accessed every day through the year and this attraction offers forest walks and mountaineering full of adventures. Balvenie castle in Glen Fiddich which was originally known as "Mortlach" is also a main tourist attraction and has been built in the 12th century. Now its ruins are upheld by Historic Scotland and the castle is open to public in the summer season.
