There are two main types of pool tables used around the world to play the game of pool, English Pool Tables and American Pool Tables. Both of them have their own legion of fans and both enjoy an equally popular cult following. But they do come with their own differences and it is these factors that render both the element of uniqueness. The table size of both the English Pool Tables and the American Pool Tables are quite different. The English ones have a range of 6 feet to 8 feet where as the official size is around 7 feet. The size of the American Pool table ranges from 8 feet to 9 feet and the official; table size is also the same.

The balls used on both the tables are also different. English Pool tables have 7 Red balls, 7 Yellow balls and 1 Black ball. They are all in solid colours and the black on has the number 8 on it. The balls on American Pool Tables are numbered from 1 to 15 and are split up into solid balls and stripes. The first seven make up for solids, the 8th one is black and the last seven being stripes. The balls on the American tables have a size of 2 inches and the pockets comparatively have a larger size. The English pool tables have a smaller size as far as both the pockets and the balls are concerned.

There are some commonalities too. Both of them have a white cue ball and have red target spots. The cloth used on the English ones is napped and the current choice is Strachan West made up of English wool. The cloth used on American tables is speedball worsted cloth and hence, allows heavier balls to be kept on it. The play on American tables is faster. Since the balls and the cloth are big and rough, the game can be played at a rapid speed. The British tables have a slow and gradual game. The 9 ball version can be played on the latter where as the former has its own sets of games.

Both the tables are good and are used by their own players. They are admired by lots of players around the world and both of these are used in international tournaments. Those who like playing the game fast choose the American version where as those wanting to take the game easily love to play the solemn version that can only be played on British tables. Rapid and elimination tournaments have American tables in place as the pace of the game is fast and the tournament can be wrapped up quickly where as the big championships where the game goes smoothly over a period of time have english pool tables and paraphernalia in place so that the game can be played at its own pace. At the end of the day, preference also matters and the one that gets chosen to be played on is the one that suits the player's liking as well.
