This is a review of the Paleo Diet which is an e-book created by Dr Loren Cordain who is an academic at the Colorado State University's Department of Health and Exercise Science. The e-book contains a series of studies that he has conducted, along with colleagues, to show why modern day diet needs to revert to something similar to our prehistoric ancestors to reverse modern day diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

The theory behind the Paleo Diet is quite simple. Cordain believes that in the days of early hunter gatherers and current hunter gatherers diet was much more suitable to the genetic design of human bodies. The theory has it that by using a reduction in the intake of complex carbohydrates and high glycemic index foods and increasing consumption of meats, seafood, whole fruits and vegetables we can greatly reduce problems like heart disease and diabetes that plague modern day western society.

Exercise does not feature heavily in the Paleo dieting process. In fact, no exercise is recommended for the initial two weeks you are on the diet. On the other hand, there is no discouragement of exercise either.

Like any diet the Paleo Diet has its advantages and disadvantages. The benefits are that this diet encourages healthy eating. It also includes a website that fully explains all the research and theory that goes into the e-book and the overall diet. The disadvantages are that the diet focuses only on eating habits and obesity rather than genetic factors that may also cause weight problems in some people.

The Paleo Diet book has both a list of the foods it recommends for eating as well as numerous recipes for maintaining your diet routine. These foods include high protein meat, poultry, fish, eggs, many vegetables, along with various fruit and nuts. While the recipes have an interesting blend of different meats, poultry, fish, eggs and vegetables. The diet is not excessively restrictive and far less limiting than the Pritikin diet for example.

Finally, any diet is only as effective as the discipline shown by the person on the diet. Many people try a specific diet but give up and lapse back into bad habits after initial dieting success. You must be disciplined if this diet is to be of real benefit to you. The Paleo Diet book is on sale for $US14.95.
