Rules of Treatment

Siff MC 'Facts & Fallacies of Fitness' 2000, Ch 14

Even the sometimes trivial world of entertainment offers some invaluable
advice to laypersons and experts alike. For instance, the American
television series called Island Son, which stars Richard Chamberlain as the
efficient Dr Kulani in the Hawaiian King Kamehameha Hospital, produced the
following gems of medical wisdom:

1. If what you are doing is helping, keep on doing it
2. If what you are doing is not helping, stop doing it
3. If you don't know what to do, do nothing
4. If there's definitely no other alternative, use surgery.

These guidelines for medical treatment apply not only to the medical world,
but in modified form to the exercise practitioner, as well. To this list may
be added many other words of practical wisdom, but two of the most
outstanding are:

A. Apply the Concerned Parent Test
B. Apply the Quality of Life Test.

The first implies that you should always treat your client as if you are a
concerned parent wanting the best results and performance with the minimum
risk for a beloved child. The latter stresses that whatever you are doing in
the fitness, therapeutic, educational or general world should always enhance
the quality of life for your client. Sincere and consistent application of
these sayings can ensure that you become or remain a true fitness or medical

professional.
