We live in an era where the days of visiting a record store to purchase music from our favorite artists, or learning about new ones, are pretty much long gone. Today, people can download music extremely easily within seconds off of the internet, as well as have access to a plethora of related genres and artists of the song that they had just downloaded. Even if you don't wish to download a song, you can simply type the song name into an internet search engine, and within a second or two, and you can see all kinds of information about the song, such as when it was released, its genre, and even a biography of the artist(s) of the song.

There are many websites online that offer MP3s for download, as well as other sites that offer free songs from lesser-known bands. Some sites even release songs free for download, just for fun. For websites that do charge a fee, the price is usually small. It is almost always 1 AUD to 3 AUD for just one song, no more, no less.

Some websites offer only a select variety of music, perhaps those of a certain genre, and only those of that particular genre. Usually, whatever songs found on these special websites cannot be found in other popular sites. On the other hand, there are some very large websites that carry hundreds of thousands of songs, featuring genres ranging from rock to salsa, or categories like the top 40, or top 100 rock songs. One advantage of downloading music online is how you can use a mobile device to get the latest hits anytime you want, as long as you've got a connection.

Generally speaking, anytime you pay a reputable website for an MP3, the quality will be at 320kbps, or 256kbps. In other words, it will be of an excellent quality, so that should you decide to play the MP3 on an expensive, powerful stereo system, it will be quite difficult to detect any quality flaws that the song may have. On the other hand, you usually don't know what kind of quality a song will be when you download it for free, especially if it is not from a reputable website. The quality can be anywhere from 32kbps, which is terrible for listening, to 128kbps, which is barely acceptable for listening too. Always make sure you know what you are downloading off of the internet. If you were to play a 128kbps quality song on that same aforementioned stereo system, you would probably immediately be able to tell that the recording is of a fairly mediocre quality.

The best thing about downloading MP3s is that you could theoretically download hundreds of them in one day if you wished, assuming you have an internet connection that is at least as fast as broadband. Another advantage is that you can own your favorite song of an album without buying the whole album itself, saving you money in the long run.
