It was a Saturday morning when I went to get Stan out of his cage. Running my fingers along the bars gently, I got ready to be mugged for food and fun!

He didn't move at all. I tried again and then finally in desperation, trembling hand, I reached in side to try and awake him.

That day was one of the worst moments of my life as I had owned Stan for just 5 days. Can you imagine how low I felt right at that moment? Twenty minutes later when I came back into the room I couldn't believe my eyes. There he was up at the bars, nose sniffing and all bright eyed and mischievous!

What I know now is that this was normal for ferrets. I wish I had known it back then as I could have saved myself from so much soul searching and heartache

There are 2 situations I have been through that I will share with you. These will save you from worry and panic when you are learning how to take care of a ferret.

Sleeping

Ferrets are able sleeping into an Olympic sport. They love it, and are more difficult to wake than my 5 year old daughter. They can sleep so deeply it seems as though nothing will wake them. They have even been known to sleep through being picked up as well. Think how you might cope with that without knowing more?

So I want you to take a deep breath and have a closer look. Examine the bedding and check to see if it is moving around his nose, an indication that he I still breathing. Have a check to see if the area around the belly is moving at all. It may only be tiny movement, but it should be enough to put you at ease and relax.

Trembling

The sight of a fuzzy trembling and shaking can be quite disturbing. Fears of illness, high temperature cascade through the brain. You might imagine he is too cold and turn up the heating. You are probably getting ready to phone the vet as well.

Try to remember those ferrets are highly excitable, loyal animals. Watch them as they come to great you and you will see them tremble a little. They are also quite small compared to the rest of us. So in a busy, noisy house, they can easily get afraid.

All you need to do is comfort them, picking your ferret up to re-assure and calm. If the shaking doesn't stop then you should consult a vet
