Dog Bites and Dog Attacks-How to Prevent Them

Walking, running, cycling and jogging always have been popular in Europe and the United States. For reasons that are, to me, relatively easy to understand, not nearly as many people recreate this way in the U.S. as they do in Europe. Literally everyone does one or more of these almost on a daily basis in Europe.

No one doubts the benefits of walking, running, cycling and jogging as a great way to exercise and help keep the pounds off. Maybe that is why Europeans are on average much slimmer than their American counterparts. Many Europeans enjoy a nice long walk after dinner to help settle the food then a nightcap of Jaegermeister and a sound night sleep is in the offing.

Some of the downsides to this healthy activity in the United States are dog attacks and dog bites. Sadly, dogs bite an estimated 4.5 million Americans each year. The consequences can be serious: seven hundred fifty thousand of these bites require medical attention.

The Florida Museum of Natural History released some statistics showing from 2000-2006 11 people died from shark attacks in the U.S. In that same period 144 died from dog attacks or 24 a year on average. Wikipedia claims the number is closer to 26.

To me there is nothing more frightening than a pack of dogs on the loose and in your way on a walk especially if you have your dog on a leash. It sends chills down my spine.

What can you do about it? On the cautionary side:

1.You can plan ahead and avoid routes you know may be dangerous.

2.Be constantly aware that dogs are animals and as such are largely unpredictable.

3. Be cautious around dogs.

4. Never turn your back or run away from a dog.

5. Carry a telescopic stun baton. It has proven itself time after time to be a successful deterrent. It has a reach of nearly 22 inches and carries a punch of 800,000 volts-enough to change any dog's mind.

There is no certain way to prevent a dog from charging you and your best friend. You have every right to defend yourself and your dog from these attacks. Following the above suggestions will go a long way to protecting you from a nasty fate.
