A true connoisseur will tell you never to judge a piece of art; just take in whatever appeals to you and move on. So when Studio Vasant in Hauz Khas Village held an exhibition of various artists in May we decided to do just that. But were left with some thoughts...

With a mix of themes like abstract, nature, people and divinity, the upcoming and contemporary artists have shown that art for them is purely an expression of their innermost loves. "My paintings are about love. This love can take various forms. It can be people, nature, and love for God or even marine life. I don't have a particular theme on which I paint. As long as the underlying point is love, I paint it," said Poonam Kohli whose work hangs in the gallery with other artists.

Poonam has a simplistic and innocent way of expressing her work. Her use of red, green and blue adds a touch of softness and charm to her work. Take for example a painting of fish. With a backdrop of aquatic plants, the fish have a without-a-care-in-the-world languid motion to them. Water has always been associated with a source of life and looking at it creates a serene atmosphere. While one painting of hers has a calming affect, the other, in crimson, is an eye opener. "That has been made by joining five canvases to make one large painting-The Eye of the God. With an illusion of fire all around it, the painting is very dramatic and has no serenity in it," she avers.

While one artist wants to capture the viewer's attention by using bold colours, others like Ajay Kumar use a simple theme, divine love to hold the attention. Roop Chand, too, finds his expression by talking about peace. His painting of Lord Buddha, which is a combination of acrylic and pen ink, creates an aura of quiet and peace. And there is abstract work by Viktor Vijay and Hemraj. While Hemraj's oil painting is on linen, Viktor's acrylic work is on canvas. It is very difficult to understand an abstract painting. For many the abstract by Viktor may appear to be like an 'Om' or even 'Lord Ganesh', for the artist it could be something that is less complicated. It could be that the artist was trying to bring out the contrast in the colours that he has used-grey with a little red in between. So while the works have a cross section of expression, in the end it is a combination of poetry, romance and fun in the painting that brings happiness.
