First, just how does the body function
To start off with lets look at just how the human body deals with a particular area. Especially in the Digestive system area. A really intricate process but I will try and simplify it. Glucose is produced when the body digests food. Glucose is a sugar that is fuel for the body. This fuel then enters into the blood stream. This is how it gets around the body. Now, just moving around in the bloodstream is not where the fuel needs to be. If this blood sugar is to be used for creating energy then it needs to be redirected out of the bloodstream. It needs to go to places that can actually use it. Like muscles. Introducing the one and only - INSULIN. Insulin. The wonder hormone that is created by the Pancreas. Now the muscles, liver cells etc that are crying out for fuel to produce energy has insulin to thank for transferring the fuel from the bloodstream to them. Now the fuel can be used where it is needed and not just stuck in the blood stream.
People with diabetes
With Diabetes a few things in the process can go wrong. Diabetic sufferors sometimes produce too little insulin or even none at all as in Type 1 diabetes. Another problem is that their own bodies can build up a resistance to insulin and make it much less effective in its job. This obviously leads to excess blood sugar in the bloodstream and not enough in the areas that need it for fuel. .
Varieties
Of the three sorts of Diabetes there are varying degrees of seriousness. Obviously all varieties need regular checks and a care of what your life-style is but some impact more than others. Some call for shots, some demand a healthy way of living and some may go away after a period,Type 1 Diabetes. This is where the body cannot produce any insulin or not sufficient amounts to be effective. It is usually discovered when the sufferor is a child or very early on, even though it can manifest later in life too. The insulin has to be introduced to the body. Typically by injection and commonly every day. Simply to keep the body working correctly. No-one understands what leads to type 1 diabetes mellitus. Men and women have analyzed it for generations and we are still no nearer the truth. We just do not understand yet.
Type 2. The most widespread variety. Usually happens in adults but not always and is not as severe as type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is normally where the individuals body has produced a level of resistance to insulin. It stops it doing its work effectively. The transfer of blood sugar does not happen at all or enough. Simply because of the way Type 2 diabetes builds up over time some individuals do not really even realise they have it. Well, not until it evolves into a severe ailment anyway.
Last type - Gestational Diabetes. Pregnant women suffer from this. Even if they have had no earlier connection with Diabetes. Insulin is blocked (or reduced) by her homones to divert to the growing baby. This causes a deficiency in her own body.
