Detecting and controlling mold in the home is essential for your family's health, especially if there is someone in the family who has a respiratory ailment. The problem is that mold easily reproduces and sends out tiny spores into the indoor or outdoor air.
These spores will land on any surface, and they will begin to grow, flourish and reproduce if they find plenty of moisture. It is moisture and excessive water that creates the perfect growing environment for mold. Unfortunately, mold can grow on just about anything, including food, paper, carpeting, drywall, tile, carpeting, wood, or just about any other surface or place that has high humidity or moisture levels.
What is most unfortunate about mold are its potentially severe health effects, and you need to be on the lookout for symptoms if there has been mold exposure. The symptoms may vary from person to person, but they can include asthma, coughing, sneezing, allergic reactions, shortness of breath, and other respiratory concerns.
If you have had any type of water emergency, you need to deal with the problem right away, or you will give mold the potential to grow and thrive. You will need to reduce the humidity levels in your home, and this can be accomplished by running the air conditioners, venting your bathrooms, running fans, and using dehumidifiers.
Any wet or moist building material needs to be cleaned and dried out completely or it will present a perfect place for mold to grow, and this includes carpeting, furniture, floor covers, ceilings, drywall, or any other material that has been in contact with water. If the building material is not effectively dried, you can soon expect to see mold growing on it.
Whatever you do, you should not place carpeting in any areas that usually have condensation or too much moisture, especially not in bathrooms. If a carpeted area gets excessive moisture, it becomes the perfect place for mold to take hold and spread.
Unless you are an expert, with the right equipment and cleaning materials, it is not practical to attempt to get rid of mold. You could try to make your home as dry as possible, but that will not help if mold is already present. Keep in mind that you will have a 24-48 hour window from the time an area has been exposed to excessive moisture to the time when you can expect to see mold growing.
Constant problems with mold and moisture in the home need to have a permanent solution, or there will be an ever-present mold problem. You could try cleaning up yourself, and drying things out, but do not forget the amount of time that you actually have to try to get things done.
You can deal with the area that is being affected by mold, but it will be to no avail unless you are able to find the source of the moisture or water. If you cannot track down the source, it would be best for you to call water damage remediation professionals to come to your home and conduct the cleanup, drying and repair.
